United healthcare harmony8/7/2023 ![]() You often have to take a class before a specialist will see you. PCPs will also push hard on taking classes with their Health Ed department. The PCP is likely to listen to you if you also listen to them and follow the stupid Kaiser HMO protocols (which are there to save money, and also address behavioral change before looking at internal issues). ![]() I had to push *hard* to get the referral, and that only happened after I did what was asked of me. It wasn't until I jumped through the hoops of getting 3 rounds of labs and 2 different appointments before I finally got a referral to Gastroenterology. I've had growing migraines and GI issues. Internal medicine docs are great with multi-system issues, but they cannot be your PCP and are seen by referral only (they often sub in as the on-call docs when you call the nurse line). They are there to write scripts, request labs, and make referrals. Family Medicine doctors won't sit with you and cogitate about what they think is going on. You need to come to appointments prepared with information about your health and any research you've done on your own. These docs cycle out pretty frequently and have large caseloads. With Kaiser, everything is run through your PCP (primary care provider), who is (generally) part of the Family Medicine department and your named doctor. Kaiser can be a pain to deal with initially, but once you get into a specialist, you're in great hands. I have Kaiser and I suffer from multi-system health issues.
